ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL RIVERS
Imagine being woken by the cool lapping sound of the river swirling around your houseboat. That's just one attraction on the Murray River, which tumbles down from its source in the High Country, flowing through river red gum forests, wetlands teeming with birdlife, rich agricultural land and busy river towns.

> Winding its way to the Southern Ocean in South Australia, the Murray remains a very special part of Australia's heritage. In ancient times, Aboriginal tribes lived close to its banks, taking advantage of the river's healthy fish population. When the area was settled, paddle steamers became the Murray's vital transport system, linking the inland to the coast. The best way to explore the river is by embarking on a houseboat holiday – there are options to suit any budget.

DID YOU KNOW...?

Sunsets in the region can be spectacular.
  • You can explore the Murray from the paddle steamer capital of Australia, Echuca-Moama. From here you can take a cruise or hire a houseboat - paddle steamers and riverboats still pull into its historic wharf. For half a century from 1853 the Murray was a virtual water highway.

  • In close proximity to the Murray are the region's premier wine districts, including Rutherglen and Mildura and Perricoota around Moama.

  • Halfway between Sydney and Melbourne is bustling border town of Albury-Wodonga, the hub of a vibrant and beautiful region and a great base from which to explore historical sites, wineries and the Alps.

  • There's a little woolly history to be found in picturesque Deniliquin, where the breeding of the famous Peppin Merino was pioneered in the 1850s.

  • Lake Hume is a mecca for watersports including fishing, boating, sailboarding and waterskiing, and has a capacity six times that of Sydney Harbour.
