THE NATION'S FRESH PRODUCE BASKET
From the mountains of the Great Dividing Range at Tumut to the vast plains west of Hay, the Riverina is a memorable blend of peaceful rural life and rugged Snowy Mountain country. Thanks to fertile farming communities, the region is rich in diverse and delicious produce ranging from citrus and stone fruits, vegetables, wine and rice to gourmet products.

> And there's lots to see – including superb caves, historic drovers' huts and, in the warmer months, highland plains full of vivid wildflowers. The rough, untamed mountainous countryside inspired much-loved Aussie poet Banjo Paterson to write "The Man from Snowy River".

FAMOUS FOR...

This has to be one of the most exciting ways to see the Riverina ... naturally! The Dog on the Tuckerbox This bronze monument is an Aussie bush legend – and both a song and a poem of the same name - 'five miles from Gundagai'.

One Tree Hotel Follow the trail from Hay to Booligal to see this abandoned hotel. Now derelict, it presents a classic Outback photo opportunity, particularly at sunset. It has been used as a backdrop for TV commercials.

Australia's highest township Cabramurra does hold the lofty title as the highest settlement in Australia. Its tiny population of just 240 people are nearly all employed by the Snowy Mountains Authority.

The Coolac Festival of Fun Held annually in March, the fun includes lots of food, wine, dancing competitions, a Black Tie dinner and a variety of renowned entertainers, chefs and arts personalities.

Trout fishing The rivers and streams around the Tumut area offer superb trout fishing – and the Blowering Dam Trout Hatchery is Australia's largest commercial trout farm.

Green Oasis The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme is centred on Griffith. The migrant workers who came to work on the MIS have given the city a strong Mediterranean style in its sidewalk cafes, market gardens and vineyards.

It has been claimed that by March 1860 there were up to 10,000 people on the diggings. The population had stabilised at about 300 several years later.
