FAMOUS FOR...

Old Coathanger. The old coathanger The Sydney Harbour Bridge links the north and south and is possibly the city's favourite icon. For the best views walk along the bridge's pedestrian walkway, or book a BridgeClimb (not for those scared of heights!)

The Sydney Opera House Perched on the eastern headland of Circular Quay, the Sydney Opera House is well known for its distinctive roof, shaped like sails. The four auditoriums here host ballet, classical music, theatre, film and of course, opera.

King's CrossThis exciting, colourful neon lit main drag is best known as the city's red light district – however, a bit of local knowledge will help you expose its urban chic underbelly. Spotted along Victoria Street, Darlinghurst Road and in the mryiad of laneways, you'll find pockets of hop bars, funky eateries and some of Sydney's serious `Masters of Cool.'
Bondi Beach Nowhere is that breezy fish'n'chips lifestyle more evident than in Sydney's most famous beachside locale. In summer, visitors flock to enjoy beach culture with attitude.

Home and Away This long-running soap set in the mythical Summer Bay is actually filmed on and around Sydney's Palm Beach, on the Northern Beaches.

  • There's great shopping to be found in Sydney's beautifully restored Queen Victoria Building and the Pitt Street Mall. Weekend markets at Glebe, Paddington and Bondi are also popular for arts, crafts, second hand goods, clothes and jewellery.
     
  • Head to The Rocks to get a real sense of convict history. The cobbled side-streets, stone heritage buildings and charming pubs are full of life. Don't forget to have a beer in Lord Nelson, Sydney's oldest pub.
     
  • Sydney Tower (formerly known as 'Centrepoint') is 305 metres high and held in place by 56 seven-tonne cables. It offers fantastic views of the city and has two revolving restaurants.
     
  • Behind Macquarie Street is The Domain, a huge grassy area that holds several free outdoor concerts such as Christmas Carols and Jazz in the Park. Film fans also converge on the area for Australia's amateur film festival, Tropfest.
     
  • The happening in-crowd frequent Sydney's Oxford Street – a long strip of shops, cafes, pubs, bars and nightclubs popular with the gay community. The street is closed each year during Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade.
